ironic? no, it’s dead serious: sally shapiro keeps on dreaming of barbie and ken. sometimes good things come to those who wait, as is the case with sally shapiro. one shouldn’t really imagine the bashful swede from göteborg, who never performs live, setting a new trend for turning down lucrative offers. and the thought that she is working on something hip, is most likely even a little eerie for her. after all, she s just into something, which she’s been doing since her childhood in the 1980s — singing songs in the style of her idol sandra (”maria magdalena“). if she hadn’t met her companion johan agebjörn, who despite his musical socialization with techno in the 1990s has been deep into italo disco for the past few years and is a collector of zyx records, sally’s passion for synthi songs and fairy-like female vocals would have remained private. however, johan was screwing together some italo-style songs when he asked sally (whose voice he’d only heard from a previous christmas party karaoke) if she would improvise on his soft keyboard tunes, their collaboration was a done deal.
subsequent to their first releases on the labels diskokaine and permanent vacation, sally shapiro suddenly found herself in the midst of the ultra-hip neo/italo-disco movement, which is especially big in scandinavia. why of all things on the northern peninsula, where one traditionally listens to black metal and indie rock played with legs spread apart, the peculiar, yet sunny disco music became such an export hit, stays one of the mysteries of the pop business. it’s a fact, though, that next to internationally celebrated norwegian neodisco-heroes lindström, prins thomas and todd terje, the lovely sally has become the scandinavian disco-act in the mean time.

first seconds into already 27th release on recognition, and we immediately know that there is serious business going on here. stunningly complex drum track goes like clockwork, only setting the scene for what is to come. forget the craft of drum programming - we are talking another dimension here. >modern dance< is like being suddenly dropped into suspended animation: having that peculiar feeling that the world around is accelerating to the verge of a seizure - and at the same time this very world feels so slow... unnamable, transparent sheets of sound almost give no room to breathe - but ones breath is taken away by the magnificent landscape it s about to appear. shapes shift under half-closed eyelids, and while the low, peaceful yet sad chant comes in, one can feel it like an omnipresent breath, burning hot and marble cold at the same time. this mysterious and heart-wrenching voice comes courtesy of one yula, and were gonna surealy hear much more from her in the future. and it seems that the beats literally start to boil... rhythms shuffle and swing, and taken the lack of floating melodies abundant in jaceks earlier output this track is even more outstanding from theproducers former work - probably acting as a bridge towards new visions, appearing in the confidence of the new, almost-perfect studio.

moleculez returns to meta4 ready to clear dancefloors with some of his most destructive material to date. you know you are dealing with some serious dance music when none of the tracks on a release have vocal samples. the opening track, future in progress, is blessed with a wonderfully deep kickdrum that would probably even sound good at plus20, although we havent tried that yet. out of a nowhere the track suddenly seems to have stopped when an eerie melody creeps out of the dark. this sets the tone for the rest of the release: dark, driving and threatening. gargoyle is the most driving. lava bomb the eeriest: and future in progress the most threatening. thats what we think, anyway. you decide. the last two tracks on this release are probotector and the haunted. the first is actual textbook honest to goodness industrial hardcore while the latter isnt really anything we can talk about here. highly recommended because we want to sell records

some serious biznizz goin on here, no doubt - elementals brand new 12 inch for reduction brings some major, dirty break-step action to the floor, phat-ass, squelchy, distorted, squashed low-end and rollin beats make for two dark and heavy drops. this is the kind of style that wears its junglist roots on its sleeve, with a real, late night warehouse rave nastiness - and we totally love it. elementals growing reputation for tough dubstep cuts is supported by a succession of releases from him for labels such as audio freaks and urban graffiti, he s had tracks appear alongside scuba on hotflush, released with caspa & rusko (dub police / destructive), been remixed by boxcutter, and featured on fabric live.32 mixed by tayo. bristols reduction label first debuted with a plate from wedge (paradise lost / z-audio) featuring a remix from gatekeeper (soul jazz / tempa). here they bring a prime slice of local talent from a west country city positively teeming with innovative music.

slam bring us the third chapter in their devestating paragraph series, following up their dancefloor destroyer, hot knives that was played by the biggest djs around and dubbed as one of carl craig s favourites of the last few months. the label s previous releases have already had big support from the rest of the techno fraternity, including legends richie hawtin, adam beyer, dubfire, anja schneider, len faki and francois kevorkian.
paragraph number 3 delivers some deep, bass-heavy electronic funk on the a-side, with one note samba . grooving from the off-set, the percussive elements of the track wind around a solid and heavy sub bass, introducing dubbed-out horns reminiscent of slam s freelance science days. hypnotic and tripped out, slam return to their house roots.
on the aa room 2 , dedicated to one of the world s best clubs, fabric, where slam hold a residency, keeps with the stripped-down, rhythmic and gritty sound of paragraph. whilst constantly fluctuating echoes and delays control the rhythm of the track, a swirling, yet straight to the point synth creates some frenzied and panic-inducing builds throughout, leading to a wholesome and satisfying ride cymbal. room 2 is a killer, peak-time track that will be sure to induce some serious convulsions on dance-floor.

kicking off the ep is kritical audios >spandex<, a tune that comes slow on the heels of the swedish duos 2006 braindance monster >krupp<. the swedish duo have come with an itchy slice of razor sharp electrofunk with a burbling acid bassline thats currently being caned by surgeon and rob hall (who says, i ve been playing the kritical audio track a lot. good stuff )... this is a big tune!

quality remastered reissue of automats legendary self titled lp. originally released in 1978 and produced by claudio gizzi and romano musumarra, this lp was completely groundbreaking at the time being built completely from synthesised sounds and rhythms with the band even building their own synth especially for the job. now one of the holy grails of the italo disco scene, the original changes hands for top dollar on ebay etc. features the classic æautomat - the rise, the advance, the genius, a magnificent italo synth epic spanning the whole of side a which features in dutch electro disco don i-fs top five italo records of all time. available here with full original sleeve artwork, this is a must for the serious disco collector.

this is what happens, the third release on the botanika label, is a story of two cities: tel-aviv, israel, represented on the a side by polar pair, and detroit, usa, represented by both atlantis, with a ferocious spoken word delivery, and mark flash, whose classic detroit soulful techno remix occupies the b side - both of whom hail from the underground resistance collective. the collaboration between polar pair and atlantis, the voice behind urãs classic transitions, came about after a meeting in tel aviv in spring 2007, and now the dubplate is creating serious club-buzz in the underground scenes of both cities, as in the ur related forums.

on their introductory minus ep, click box offers a refreshing return to a bygone era of classic instrumentals, full of experimentation and passion generated by that ongoing love affair between man and machine. berlin shades starts out in a jittery minimal fashion but soon dives much deeper as the tough electro bassline expands and contracts dragging the dancer to and fro. the cascading hook and in-your-face sci-fi synth motif add a sense of tongue-in-cheek drama to a dynamic arrangement that incorporates steep inclines, sharp drops and snaking pathways. as the short staccato bass riff gains momentum and the hook comes round for the second time you just know somethings lying in wait and the boys certainly dont disappoint. lost road is anything but a blind alley, kicking off with some low-slung interplay between a two-note bassline and a whiplash snare that dishes out a serious spanking. hi-hats fizz across the audio spectrum, cleverly pitching up and down before a drunken bass sequence ushers in the main section with its sliding, twisted synth distortions primed for surprise and immediate disorientation. once all the elements are in play, the fun really starts with so many objects of interest competing for attention. the arrangement is pulled and pushed to great effect extracting maximum effect from this tough little unit. more electro flavour to the fore as the loose, broken beat intro and robot sounds of some toys make for some slick moves on the dancefloor. the retro synth riffs and dark spiralling pads conjure up images of some early 80s lab full of computer kids in white coats twiddling knobs on huge mainframe monoliths. the bouncing bass and analogue belches make this a must for all retro-tastic electro-boogie fans. the theme continues over into voxer as rising filtered bass tones playout over another trademark click box drum pattern, this time doused in heavy reverb and delay. an array of analogue bleeps, screams and laser beams keep the motor ticking over.

second installment by berlin based mri who successfully cultivated since 2002 some serious dance terrains. this release carries two outstanding and rare remixes as well as one original track. by taking techno deep into the mine shafts of dub, chain reactions / basic channel artist fluxion created an eerie, full-circle remix of the latter. you can hear that a man is at work who knows his gear well and is good in what he is doing. the production is brilliant, the selection of sounds superb, set-ups are constructed with caution, superimpositions are finely layered, propagations and ripenings are get going in a well-considered manner. dreadnaught bassline, steady hi-hats and lo-fi clips – a must for basic channel fans ! on the flip, young talented producer u.e.s. delivers the meanest blend of modern techno style and reduced shaped subs that just creams it on every system. and as well as both guys together does mri with original track rough. the „el castillo“ ep separates the styles over two sides and with „rough“ functioning as a wicked minimal techno track with shifted groove hinging on a grinding bassline - drives the track into abyssal techno territory. fans of basic channel and modern electronic music enthusiasts will be all over this beauty.

played by karotte, giles smith (secretsundaze), laurent garnier... already up to its 17th release, yore keeps rolling on, this time with a new release by memory foundation. in 1994 robert hood found his way into a dark basement somewhere in viennas suburbia. mr. hood was impressed by what he had heard, and with him a dat-tape took a long journey back to where techno was invented once. with their first appearance on detroits m-plant label 15 years ago, the memory foundation or one of their many alter egos found its way into the hearts and the record-bags of many serious electronic music lovers. in 1997, after setting up their own record labels central and together with jeremiah grow! and other releases on m-plant, 7th city or usm followed. the memory foundation now returns with their contribution for the yore camp, with their >reptiles in exile ep< they prove that they havent lost their magic touch. the track burns with electro-funk fire, with natural kit and cymbal sounds giving the already-surging cut extra thrust and the staccato burble of metallic chords adding berlin flavour. a lithe eight-note bass motif anchors the warm techno-funk of >bass traveller< as a flaring synth motif squiggles alongside rhodes chords and a boogieing clavinet line, and its easy to become so engrossed by the tunes relaxed swing that the artistry of its arrangement can go underappreciated. textbook body music, >summer visions< is an earthier, mid-tempo funk workout thats sure to get the dance floor crowded, while the light-speed closer >reptiles< blazes a slinky house trail whose fresh swing has got yore written all over it. with any luck, we wont be waiting twelve more years for the next memory foundation release

l-vis 1990 is quickly solidifying himself as a bass-prodigy. you re forgiven if you re unfamiliar with the name but pay attention - this 25 year old from brighton has stormed on the scene and is making some of the most singular dance music we ve heard of late - this stuff is truly standout. with the ever-building epic come together and the floating then undeniably face smashing united groove , we re hearing a heavy sound with a new and refreshing take on structure and style. he has upcoming releases on kitsune & dim mak as well, plus a busy club schedule with his night slugs monthly in london, and one offs at the biggest european clubs (fabric london, social club paris, scala berlin, etc). oh and did we mention that with all that he still finds the time to make videos for the likes of dance area and riton!? definitely one to keep your eye on. in the meantime, these two tracks form a serious weapon. amazing new mad decent record that s making big waves worldwide. touches of grime, house, uk funky and your classic mad decent styles. big.

oliver dahl returns with another premium ep on noir music. his outstanding productions have been getting serious attention ever since his very first rien on noir music.

yeah, our favourite b boy house band soultourist is back with old strength! the fo eva ep is a timeless beauty with different shades. the title track is a booty bouncing dubhouse tune, which is reducing to the max to let the bassline and the beatz shine. wild catz is definitely bringing back memories to their 2007 hit turn loose and with televised they are expressing their peaktime moments. gruber & nuernberg from germany delivered a serious remix of fo eva and you can be sure that this one will be big for fans of the new german house movement. all in all its just a great work and they can certainly be proud of their originality...
